Mm. I came on this thing to do Economics homework. I looked at the first question. I had no idea how to answer it. So I started reading LJ. Now, I've got that character that I wasted quite a while writing a history for polished off and sent, which is only going to make matters worse, but no Economics homework (or indeed homework of any kind).

You know how teenagers traditionally get, around 13-15 years of age, when they don't want to go to school and don't want to do this or that and just moop around the house all day complaining loudly that they're bored? Well, that's me, now. This is not the right time to hit this particular phase, you stupid delayed development rubbish! I have, like, exams to do and homework that's actually difficult and stuff. But I can't settle to anything, I can't *do* anything even when I try to start it. It's Wednesday already and I haven't done a scrap of the massive amount of homework I've got for half-term. And I've replied to the grand total of one email. Wah.

Of course, I should 'just get on with it', but it's not as if I don't keep trying to start; I just sit there and look at a blank page/screen and my brain goes completely and utterly blank, and I feel like crying. Stupid work. Stupid brain.

Lol. i aint got one but i know where they are. work ina uni. The pay wont be as good as in industry but its alot more fun and if you stay there you will end up in a position where you have to do very little taxing work for a nice pay check.

What job do you do?

I used to be a programmer. I just lost that job, though.

Some people say it's actually tougher to survive in university than in industry; I wouldn't know, because I've only worked in industry. Work in a uni isn't easy to come by, besides.

I worked as a technician at a uni and i lost that job.

Your right but there is more preasure in industry and that leads to stress related mind blows.

What do you program in? is there anythign you have coded that i could play with?

Well, I have some level of competency in Perl, Python, Javascript, Visual Basic, C, C++, Java, SQL and PHP.

Nothing I've written for pay is available (to anyone, including me any more), but there's plenty I've written for amusement:

http://www.wurb.com/if/game/338 (likewise)
http://gnusto.mozdev.org
http://www.squirrelmail.org/plugin_view.php?id=57 (not much supported now)

Very nice but a little beyound me. You do realise that he first link you put there gives only this

"Nope, don't have one of those."

Ive done the smallest amount of proramming you can do in c and found it very stress full. I liked it in the good old days of basic. i could get my hed round the simple bits of that. i could do alot with basic excluding grafix and file handleing. But good old DOS batch programing was the best for me. My 486DX2 66 played the x files theam when it booted up on the pc speaker ;-)

And sorry chess that this has once again moved away from your topic. If i knew how to work (marnanel)'s LJ then i would prolly talk about this there.

Oops, sorry. http://marnanel.org/joule -- no trailing slash.

If you liked Basic but not C, try Python-- it's easy to learn, interactive like Basic but far more structured, and there are versions for all major operating systems.

Starting commenting on something (anything) or reading the comments for a post (So you ought to have it at the moment). You'll have a menu bar down the side.

Under the second heading (Settings) there's a link "You Friends". Click on that, and follow the instructions it gives.

HTH,
Neil

The way he has a username and a picture of himself leads me to believe that he may infact have already taken this step (I guess you wrote that comment whilst in links/lynx).
