As it appears to be fashionable, I will now rant about 300.
300 is an enjoyable film which contains plenty of impressive pectoral muscles and blood. That said, there are just a couple of things I feel like mentioning on the minus side:
a) The tactics. "We fight in a phalanx, so that means we start off in an impressive line *and then we all break formation and run around like loons*. Oh, and we have this excellent defensive position, so we'll repeatedly abandon it to let the enemy have a larger front to fight against on the open bit just outside." from the Spartans. "We have an inexhaustible supply of troops so we'll only attack in one way at a time and we'll stop and let the enemy rest at night, instead of continually harrying them so they can't refresh themselves for the next wave. Oh, and we'll put our Supreme Leader in missile range." from the Persians.
b) The nipples. If you've seen the film, you'll understand.

Date: 2007-03-27 07:08 pm (UTC)From:Mostly good points; but medieval and ancient rulers did, in fact, willingly go into danger - Richard Lionheart was killed by an archer in a castle he was besieging, while Alexander the Great received serious wounds from combat on multiple occasions. I've no idea if Xerxes was cast from the same mould, though.
(Within the logic of the film, Xerxes probably considered himself outside missile range - Leonidas did have to (i) ditch his armour and helmet and (ii) be a hero in order to away injure the Great King.)
