"The King of France is bald". Does the first sentence make any sense if I didn't assume it referred to anything specific already?

Probably not. I was thinking of a few specific events some people might have thought I was referring to, which I wasn't. You are not one of the people who would have thought that, unless you have sources of information I don't know about...
