Sitting around a table (the dinner table in my house - you're next to the keyboards), you spot this cat, which is about the size of a dog, and you're not quite sure what it is. Dark tortoishell. (It's one of those things from Chessington, but you're not me, so you don't know that.)
You ask "What is that?". Apparently, that's Fredrick, and you should ignore him. He slopes out of your field of view.
Later in the meal, you are looking out of the patio doors, onto the patio. Fredrick is stalking a small black kitten with white paws and ears, named Lucy. What do you do?
1. Turn away and keep eating - proceed to the *2. Watch with mounting terror - keep reading.
Fredrick makes a leap at Lucy, and somewhere in that second they become children, not cats. The brown-skinned Lucy, 5, with frizzy black hair held back in a loose ponytail, screams and runs towards the house. Fredrick, somewhere between 9 and 11, autistic, white/tanned, freckled and brown-haired, solidly built, lumbers after her. What do you do?
1. Leap up and open the patio door?2. Sit there frozen in terror?
It doesn't matter - you can't get to the door in time, but Lucy just runs straight through the glass, making the curtain billow and passing through that, too. Fredrick runs into the glass, and puzzles over it for a moment. Then he is in front of you, but turned away. You hear his voice in your mind - "Henceforth you shall be cursed, for scorning me." - and he walks away.
*
You retreat to the sofa, to drink hot drinks and engage in smalltalk. While you are sipping your tea, a giant Bob The Builder, at least 7' tall, descends from the ceiling and begins to sing his signature song, while cheerfully waving at people, then sits down on the sofa next to you (it's a 3-seat sofa and he takes up 2 seats, as well as blocking most of the light). ((If you have been cursed by Fredrick, Fredrick descends behind him, scowls at you (in fact, Fredrick has a permanent scowl) and sits on the sofa-arm on the other side of Bob, next to the stereo.)) Do you:
1. Sit and wait it out (go to the next *)2. Excuse yourself toiletwards, and go upstairs (read on)
As you climb the stairs, they turn into a forest path. You find some Crow Treats on the ground, in a Pringles-type cylinder. They look like raisens. But you decide not to eat any. You keep walking through the fores, and you get to the school carpark. In the carpark is a forest-green Passat. 'P729 WOL' is the registration. It's unlocked, so you get in. Instead of normal sunblinds it has pull-down HUDs. You pull one down and it's online. It's on a page about a cool-looking fantasy game. You:
1. Pull out your Palm, plug it in and start downloading2. Keep browsing
Whichever you do, an angry-looking red-faced farmer-type man comes storming over and yells "What are you doing in my car?". If you chose to download, you can leave the Palm there and hope the farmer clears off so you can retrieve it, or yank it out of the socket - either way, you pile out the car (over the gearstick and out the driver side, as the guy is glaring in at you from the passengerside window) and run. Eventually you find your way to a train station.
*
((If you haven't got any Crow Treats: it's time to go, and everyone wishes you a good journey. You wander down Bulford Mill Lane to the train station. If you're cursed, Fredrick follows you, pelting you with small stones, and the road is flooded, and a major storm is going on. Otherwise, it's nice and peaceful.))
You sit on the platform, and eventually the train comes along. It has 'London Liverpool Street' on the front, and that's the next one due, but it's going the wrong way. You get on anyhow, and discover you're in posession of a lunchbox. The train is crowded. A red-brown-frizzyish haired, white lady sits down next to you with a (mostly blue) macaw in a gilt cage on her lap. She has lots of large gold rings on her fingers, and is wearing a dark summer dress (it's a normal spring day, not really warm enough for that) in a delicate small-flowers pattern. The Macaw asks you for some treats.
If you have no crow treats, and are cursed, read onIf you have crow treats, but are cursed, goto *If you have no crow treats, but are uncursed, goto !If you have crow treats and are uncursed, you give them to the macaw, who is satisfied, and the woman gets off at the next station, which is White Notley. You get home fine. The sandwiches contain cheese slices.
The macaw's demands become more and more insistant. The next station is Braintree Freeport. Lucy gets on the train, and jumps onto your lap, crying. You take a bite of your sandwiches, and there is something gritty and minerally in them. You force down all of one sandwich (with the macaw now trying to peck at your arm, but restrained by the cage, and Lucy having hysterics), then look in the other one. It contains some grey meat and some hard-water mineral-conglommerate rock. You pick out the rock, and Lucy snatches it and feeds it to the Macaw. The Macaw chokes. The woman looks pale, slaps you, and demands your name and address. Lucy supplies them, and the woman says she'll see you in court, storming off the train at the next stop, which is Braintree. A ticket inspector throws you and Lucy off the train. Lucy runs away. Fredrick appears next to you, but doesn't say anything. You sit on a metal bench and cry. The end.
*
You attempt to give the crow treats to the Macaw. The Macaw becomes the Fredrick-Cat and pelts you with them. Lucy gets on the train at the next stop, which is White Notley, as a cat. She huddles beneath your seat, behind your feet. The woman gets off, carrying the hissing Frederick-cat. Lucy becomes a child again and sits next to you.
