ObSmugBit: I got into Cambridge! And I didn't even have to phone them up! Yay!

(Of course, this *was* because Mrs Curtis had phoned them up *for* me at 9am, but still, apparently when she phoned them they said 'oh, yes, we were going to give her a place anyway, don't worry'...)

Nope, the magic seems to have gone away. Drat. Sounds like you'll have to fix your computer the old-fashioned way, by reinstalling everything. Sorry.

...but but but I can't! The problem is the modem and the computer and and and and ... they won't talk ...

New modems are significantly cheaper than drugs. (You can pick one up for about £10 if you hunt for a cheap one.) May I suggest that the heat might have fried your modem?

(We actually did manage to melt a modem at XF. It had a black case and we left it in direct sunlight.)

In which case, can't you take it back to whatever ingrate you got it from and say 'oi, mate, this one's busted, let's have one that isn't'?

Another good move is to swipe one temporarily from someone else and see if your computer will talk to it. At least then you'll know if it's that particular modem (in which case see above) or whether it's your computer being sniffy about modem-ness in general.

I'm going to go the "awkward and frustrating but at least I don't have to leave my room" route of ringing up Dell and whinging at them until something happens.

There are people I need to taunt with that :).

Sounds like a strategy to me. (Not necessarily a *good* strategy, but definitely a strategy.) Especially if you have too much time on your hands already. Just watch them nasty phone bill things.
