There's alcohol on the Saturday night; it's just that if you're drunk while adventuring you're more likely to fall down places, or get carried away, and break things (yourself/equipment/other people). As for 'what clothes you show up in', you can show up in anything you like as long as you have the stuff to get changed into, it's just that it's easier not to have to lug an entire change of clothing that you'll have to change into immediately (they don't have *that* much costume to lend out, for example they don't have any trousers to lend out, so you're expected to bring as much as possible that could pass for costume).
Personally, I think it would be quite amusing to wear full kit on the train over, but my parents would kill me if I tried :).
I.e. don't make people more scared of us than they are already :). I mean, we did enough scaring-of-the-normals while on-site in costume; they don't want to scare people like, for instance, *my parents*.

Why no alcohol? it's supposed to be fun? besides, it's supposed to mediaeval, and all they ever drank was ale.
And who cares what clothes you show up in? you have to wear a *costume* for it.
Gods! Who's running this?
I'm sure the actually LARP part is proably fun, but I wouldn't go to an event that I couldn't wear what I wanted to on the train over.
