After the comments to my last post, I feel I ought to clarify things.
I am *not* saying that the verse in Leviticus is irrelevant. I'm just saying it's far too easy for people to pick holes in it, so it's not the best starting point for a discussion. A discussion with another Christian, or someone who wants you to go into more depth about it, should include that verse, yes. But it shouldn't be your starting point - because it's so easy for them to point at something else in Leviticus and say 'well, you don't do this any more, surely it's the same thing?'. It's possible for them to do that with some of the stuff in Paul's letters (to fend off another criticism :-) ), but not as easy. Yes, you can probably explain why the things in Leviticus that don't need to be done any more don't, but it eats away at your argument.
I'm just fed up of seeing people dismiss the objections in Leviticus and not go on to deal with all the other places the Bible objects to it.

Date: 2002-05-24 01:56 am (UTC)From:The bible being God's word the church could be speaking God's word only if what they said was in agreement with the bible.
The church has said things that aren't God's word, there are some unpleasent historical events were the church did and said things it blatently shouldn't have.
What the church says should be checked against the bible, if they disagree, go with the bible.
The church is not a reliable spokesman of God's word (not as reliable as the bible anyhow).
"After all if you read the original bible it says its ok to a lot things like committing sodomy on animals"
It does? Where?
My bible says that sodomy and having sex with animals are wrong.
Now to my mind that means if you put them together you get something that's at least as wrong as each, I don't see them canceling out somehow.

nothing much,
is correct, and for the record I try to be mindful of others and just wish to live each day happily, trying not to step anyone’s toes, I believe that!
Have you heard of the karma system (total dualism) good v evil, no afterlife just every action has an equal counter? Well I try to practise that.
Chess I don’t understand how someone as intelligent as yourself can believe in these caveman explanation of things, the sun rises in the morning (someone must have put it there… oh a higher being) I don’t want to upset anyone but open your eyes lol dose there really need to a point to living? Can’t it just to live happily for 70 or so years why must there be an afterlife? Are you scared of death? If you live right when your time is up you should be content, maybe with legacy of children keeping yourself alive forever. But don’t waste what time you have…

In what way is this a poisonous meme, which makes me waste the time I have? I think it makes me enjoy the time that I have more; and also it means I do not have to fear death, because I know where I'm going.
I don't know about you, but I know that I need a point to living.
