If you actually wanted to write an application (like snake) for the purpose of having a working one you probably wouldn't write it in C (I'm speaking of us normal people, not you professional programming types), you'd write it in something more friendly (like python, bounce!).
The point of writing the sake game in C is the writing it bit. I suppose you get to learn some C as well, which is useful.
