Comment notification weirdness

It appears that when someone posts a reply to your comment on someone else's LJ, even if that comment would be screened by default by that other LJ's settings (e.g. due to anonymity / not being on the friends list), you get emailed the comment.

I didn't know this and so I suspect some other people don't. I'm not sure if it's relevant outside any contrived situation but I found it vaguely interesting.

I'm pretty sure it's a setting in your account settings you can switch on or off. I personally find it quite handy on the more journal-laden days for the purposes of keeping up...

I was mostly thinking of the theoretical case 'I have screened comments on my journal because I want to vet comments on my journal before they get shown to anyone else - but actually LJ is showing them to the person they're a reply to, as well!' as the one that might be troublesome...

Ah I see. Didn't think it sent them out if they were screened, but I could well be wrong. Comment screening isn't something I tend to use too often, so perhaps don't know much about!

Isn't the point that a reply-to-a-comment is considered as being at least as much 'for' the person whose comment it is, as it is the person who originated the post?

Had to work through a load of design issues for something similar last month, and there's a lot of trouble codifying what's 'going on' with standard threading.

Or conversely 'I have commented for the eyes of the person whose journal it is, safe in the knowledge that nobody else will see it because it's screened'.

Well... yeah? If you reply to someone/receive a reply it gets e-mailed out so as that the reply goes to the person that you're presumably directing your comment at. =/
