chess: (she's reasonable today)
I probably should write something about yesterday; I had a great day with [livejournal.com profile] dr_vannacutt, [livejournal.com profile] phlebas, [livejournal.com profile] adamosity and [livejournal.com profile] elly.

We'd agreed to meet at the V&A at 10am, which after much plotting (and, naturally, bucketloads of stress) ended up with me deciding to drive to Chelmsford and get the train from there, this being the compromise solution between giving up and getting the train from Cressing and driving down the A12 to a Tube station. As compromise solutions go, it was quite useful. Met [livejournal.com profile] naath and parents at the train station, but they weren't in a hurry and hence they had cheaper tickets that didn't let them into the train-y bit until 9:30am. I'd completely forgotten about the whole 'cheap day return' thing until they fell foul of it, which annoyed me slightly because I only managed to get the 9:07 at 11 past anyway, so I feel I may as well have waited for cheaper ticketsies (and for train-journey-with-[livejournal.com profile] naath) if I'd have known.

Got into LLS about twenty to ten, and got an Underground ticket from the machine, then put it through the barrier. No such luck. Went across to the gate to whine at people, but the people 'guarding' the gate were arguing amongst themselves and not interested in my ticket in the slightest despite me waving it at them hopefully, so I just wandered through. Stood around for ten minutes waiting for a train, the trains going through all being trains that terminated way before South Kensington. Eventually got a circle line train at about five to ten. Got a seat. Sat and watched people and tunnels. Wondered if I should turn my phone on, but decided it would be pointless, it being underground and all. (Currently phone is uncharged and charger is nowhere to be found. This is somewhat unhelpful.)

Got out at correct stop, ticket guy informed me I should go and use the automatic gates, not believing my ticket wouldn't work. Ticket dutifully failed to work, and he let me through the manual gate. Turned phone on and collected several text messages, including [livejournal.com profile] dr_vannacutt failing to be late and [livejournal.com profile] phlebas managing to be even later than I was. Discovered that subway was flooded, so took careful note of directions and followed swarms of people through glorious sleet, which was actually rain and snow falling simultaneously rather than some kind of actual mixture of the two. Dropped my scarf in a puddle that was so deep it floated. Appreciated the quick-drying properties of fleece scarves. Eventually made it into the V&A, and after looking lost a little found [livejournal.com profile] dr_vannacutt. Phoned [livejournal.com profile] phlebas on the grounds that I had no idea how I was going to recognise [livejournal.com profile] adamosity, but it transpired he didn't have much of an idea either. Sat around with [livejournal.com profile] dr_vannacutt for a while waiting for someone else to turn up.

[livejournal.com profile] adamosity solved our dilemma by recognising me, which was helpful of him. We proceeded to talk a lot, until [livejournal.com profile] phlebas and Elly arrived, at which point we, uhm, sat around and talked some more. After a while we decided that as we were in a museum we may as well do something museum-y. So we stood up and talked for a bit. [livejournal.com profile] phlebas and Elly seemed keen to go to the special exhibition that was on, but [livejournal.com profile] dr_vannacutt and [livejournal.com profile] adamosity decided they'd rather go to the free bit, and so did I when I saw the queue for ticketsies to the other bit (I wasn't too bothered what we did because I have an Art Fund card that gets me into that kind of thing - my parents visit art galleries a lot so we have a family membership). So we set off through some random bit that was on the same floor as us, which was very pretty, and then decided we ought to work out what we actually wanted to see. [livejournal.com profile] adamosity said he wanted to go and look at paintings, and [livejournal.com profile] dr_vannacutt and I exclaimed 'Arms and armour!'; usefully these sections were next to each other.

I've somewhat run out of time to write this up, so I'll continue some other time, maybe.
