Diary
This should have been posted on the 8th of October (i.e. Friday), so read as from then.
Today was mostly full of lectures; I suspect if I'd been listening more then it wouldn't have been so dull. I got to my first one actually before on time; it really does only take 20mins to walk to New Museums. I even managed breakfast and to check what time and where everything was.
Yesterday I meant to do some things and did other things instead. I got up and went to my Unix Tools lecture, and that was actually quite interesting. After that I planned to do lots of washing (myself, my clothes, the dirty crockery in my room), but actually I sat down and thrashed out a vaguely acceptable Tick 0 (it's rubbish and does some stuff wrong and contains one of the ugliest hacks I've had the misfortune to create, but it does behave like it ought to). Then it was time to go and eat food and wander off to The Call, although Hall managed to out-do themselves in providing nothing edible (curry, more curry, thing with onions, chicken burger with mayo) and so I had to eat more stuff in my room. Which was okay because we ended up waiting for the party including freshers, and then walked faster than them most of the way anyhow.
The Call wasn't bad but I felt a bit distant because I have the lergy and hence was mostly falling asleep. We were eventually rescued by some nice New Hall people, with which we had communion in their room. Then I went home and fell asleep.

Is that communion as in the eucharist, or some other meaning? if the former, how does that work, then?

It's basically the charismatic/evangelical kind of eucharist; someone leads it and provides wine and bread, not in any special form, and reads from the Bible and passes them around. Sometimes they're 'blessed' formally, sometimes not in any particularly formal style. There's at least one verse from the Last Supper or some kind of reminder of what was said there, and normally a symbolic 'breaking' of some of the bread. (In this particular instance, the person leading said she'd pour the wine before blessing it because then it didn't matter so much if she spilled any...) The only condition for taking the bread and wine is that you have a personal belief in God (and hence aren't 'eating and drinking judgement upon yourself').
Has that answered your question, or do you want to know anything more specific?
