*insert obligitory 'Merry Christmas' post here*

Although we decided this morning that this was definitely the 'bah, humbug' family, I'm actually quite cheerful. I've already managed to be told off for eating too much and to watch a couple of really naff films (or parts thereof, anyhow), so I feel I've done most of my Christmas duty; it just remains to go and be scared by my cousins. (The Christmas service at church actually managed to be good, which was an amazing feat. We dropped the 'show everyone your presents' bit, which I hate with the passion of a thousand firey suns (what about the kids who don't have expensive stuff, huh?), so that improved things immeasurably.)

I seem to like mince pies more this year.

(Our first song was 'Angels From The Realms Of Glory', which *we sung at vililee's*. This pleased me.)

Was there any particular reason for the showing of presents? It strikes me as directly opposed to the general position of "it's not just about presents" held by most churches. Are suns particularly passionate, then?

And what about people who, for Ancient and Traditional Reasons, don't open presents until after 3, hmm?

'The children enjoy it', I believe is the justification. It being the main aim of most Christmas services to a) be as short as possible and b) keep the children entertained so they don't start screaming.

I'm not sure that suns are notably passionate, but at least they're suitibly overdramatic.

Exactly. The whole showing of presents thing has, as I'm sure you can tell, always struck me as a bit lame and counter-productive anyway, so I'm not sure I'm the best person to be justifying it :).

We always took a stocking present. (Since we don't open other presents till after church, although we do open them before 3).

However, our church seems to have silently developed a policy of bring a present that's naff or comical (this year Colin brough about 10 satsumas from a stockings joke and Chris bought a haggis). However, I certainly conceed that this is something of an in joke and therefore not very relavent to the rest of the universe.

I'm not really a great fan of mince pies, but they pass the test 'Edible and contains large amounts of sugar', so they're quite acceptable if no other, similar offerings are present. I generally prefer my sugar with less fruit and chocolate, though :). Some mince pies are hardly sweet at all, which is a great disappointment; some of them are bordering on 'rather nice', if they have cinnamon and seriously high sugar levels, but the variability puts me off somewhat.
