No. (At most it's a 15. I've seen it twice. It's violent in places, sure, but not *that* bad.)
The book is better, I'd say, but the book and the film are entirely different experiences, so it's hard to compare. The book has more backstory and feels more complete and gives a better idea of the world/universe, but the film is much more atmospheric and has much more feeling in.
+ the original book (well the one I read) has a dune dictionary, explaining expressions general terms and phrases , known planets and a lot more… + its different in some bits when Chani says "tell me of your homeland usul" line in lynches film not "tell me of your home land muad dib" like in the book… it’s the small things they don’t call a crusty burger, crusty burger they call it quarter pounder with cheese…
