Dear Yuletide Writer
Here's your bonus copy of my signup with extra waffling :). (If you're a regular reader and have no idea what I am going on about, http://yuletidetreasure.org/ might help explain things...)
If you are my assigned writer - Don't Panic - I know I went into hideous and excessive detail in my Details sections (sorry) but I really will be glad to get any story in my chosen fandoms, promise!
If you're not my assigned writer - don't forget that my signup name is kastaka, not chess :-).
Also, please don't feel that the requests are in any 'order' - I didn't write as much waffle for some of them, but that just means I had less particular ideas rather than I will like a story from them less...
Anyway, that detail waffling in full, for those playing along at home:
Anne McCaffrey - Dragonriders of Pern - Any
I've always liked the 'dynastic' nature of the Pern books - that we get to see such a big sweep of history. So what would be great is something from Pern's future. Maybe the politics around the time when the next Pass would have been expected - or even a series of vignettes, when the next Pass would be expected, when it becomes obvious that it's not even just a Long Interval, way into the future. Or what it's like to be last - the last one to have been injured in Fall, the last one to have flown against Thread, the last one to remember a Threadfall at all, maybe even the last dragonrider?
(Feel free to leave Skies of Pern and the Todd books out of canon if you want to - or include them if you're more comfortable with that.)
I've also always liked the dragons in general - and their relationships with their riders and other people at the Weyrs. So anything set in the Weyr, about how people interact with the dragons - or even about someone's fire-lizards - would also be good.
I'm not really as keen on Harper-music-geekery fic - I understand I might have been matched on a Harper, having picked Any, but there is a lot of politics and adventure the Harper Hall get up to as well as making music, and I'd rather see that side of them if possible.
Neal Stephenson - The Diamond Age - Nell
What happens next? How does Nell's 'kingdom' find somewhere to settle, establish itself? What does it look like to live there after it's been around for a while?
If you want to write something from an 'on the street' PoV where Nell is only present by her influence, that's fine. (Showing Nell 'on-screen' is good too!)
Iain Banks - The Culture series - Any
I'm just after some snippet of life in the Culture - like the party on the barge in Look to Windward or the scenes on board ship in Use of Weapons. Some kind of illustritive incident about Culture people being Culture people, the way the society works, how it looks from the inside and from the outside, that kind of thing.
